Estudio comparativo de las fuentes de los temblores de Victoria, junio 9, 1980, del Valle Imperial, octubre 15,1979 y de El Golfo, agosto 7, 1966

Resumen

Se estudia la fuente de tres sismos con Ms > 6.0 que ocurrieron en la Cuenca Saltón: el de Victoria (Ms = 6.4) del 9 de junio de 1980, del Valle Imperial (Ms = 6.9) del 15 de octubre de 1979 y de El Golfo (Ms = 6.3) del 7 de agosto de 1966. Para estimar los parámetros focales del primer sismo se hace una búsqueda sistemática en el espacio de soluciones; luego se utiliza, para los tres eventos, un método de deconvolución de sismogramas telesísmicos de período largo para determinar la función temporal de la fuente; por último, se aplica un método de localización relativa para determinar los puntos de inicio y de término de cada ruptura. La ruptura del sismo de Victoria se propagó unilateralmente en la Falla de Cerro Prieto hacia el noroeste del epicentro, sobre una longitud de 29 km Y con una velocidad de 2.7 km/seg. En el caso del temblor del Valle Imperial, la ruptura fue bilateral a lo largo de la Falla Imperial, en dirección noroeste y sureste desde el punto de inicio. La ruptura del sismo de El Golfo a lo largo de la Falla de Cerro Prieto fue unilateral y hacia el noroeste, con una longitud y una velocidad de propagación de ruptura de 16 km Y 1.9 km/seg, respectivamente. Los resultados indican que los procesos de ruptura de los sismos de Victoria y del Valle Imperial fueron más complejos que para el sismo de El Golfo. Además, se concluye que existe, en la Cuenca Saltón, una complejidad de estructura tal que excita pulsos secundarios que se observan en los registros telesísmicos.
