Abstract
This is a progress report on GEOBAS, a compilation and statistical analysis system for International Geochemical reference Samples. GEOBAS is written in dBASE IV and is applied to statistical analysis of Rare Earth Elements. As an example, GEOBAS is applied to five samples from the U.S. Geological Survey: basalts BCR-1, BHV0-1 and BIR-1, quartz latitc QL0-1 and Cody shale SCo-1. The means generated by GEOBAS agree within 10% with the published values. When the compiled data for a sample are less than 10, however, the differences between the published means and the means generated with GEOBAS may reach as high as 19%. In this case, the median is a more reliable estimator than the mean.
