Abstract

The analysis of arrival times and first motion data indicates that the focus of the October 24, 1980 (14:54 GMT; 6.6 mb; 7.0 Ms) Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca earthquake islocated at 18.03°N and 98.20°W and 65 km deep inside the Continental Plate. The main rupture occurred as normal faulting probably along a fault striking N 88º W and dipping approximately 26º toward NNE. The aftershock activity defines a 32 km long and 10 km wide elongated area oriented NW-SE. The seismic intensity distribution shows a clear amplification toward the sou theast as compared to the north due possibly to an energy focusing phenomenon, caused by the orientation of the fault and the rupture mechanism itself.
