Abstract

The Basin of Mexico offered a vast variety of resources to pre-hispanic communities settled in it. From the five lakes they extracted subsidiary food, raw materials for construction and also communication facilities important for societies that could not develop animal traction. Depending on the sociopolitical organization which dominated, the resources were exploited following patterns of productive specialization, wide-scale redistribution or tribute.
