Abstract

The characterization of an area with a high geothermal potential is attempted using Landsat MSS images, digital elevation models, geologic and tectonic maps for Los Humeros geothermal field (Mexico), where exploration studies are in an advanced stage. The location of unreported lineaments was obtained by directional filtering of an MSS image and the artificial illumination of a digital elevation model; some lineaments were confirmed as faults by ground geology. Combining these results with the drainage pattern, unreported faults related to production wells were identified. Models of reservoir outflow based on the occurrence of hydrothermal minerals and of fluid inclusion data agree with the main local recharge areas and the major faults and fractures that were identified. Most of these faults and fractures are related to caldera collapse or to regional tectonics.
