Convection in an internally heated mantle
Main Article Content
Abstract
Numerical studies of convection in an internally heated mantle of variable viscosity indicate that the high viscosity boundary layer (lithosphere) increases the aspect ratio of the convection cells to at least 4:1. These studies also put sharp limits on the possible viscosity profile with depth. They confirm that the temperature below the lithosphere is close to adiabatic.
