Forecasting hurricane-induced high water surges.
Main Article Content
Abstract
An extended review of the theoretical aspects of the storm surge problem was published recently by Welander(1961), Fortak (1962) gave a unified discussion last year. An extensive non-mathematical description of the physical processes involved together with the observational data for 26 tropical storms and hurricane has just been published by Harris (1963). The research in this field is tending more and more to be concerned with the problems of computational stability, coastal engineering, and shallow water oceanography rather than meteorology. Therefore, we feel that a status report of the storm surge warning system as it exists in the United States and a brief report on research and development projects now underway will be more useful to this group than a report of specialized research.
