Abstract

In the special issue of Geofísica Internacional dedicated to the geothermal area of Los Humeros, Puebla, Mexico (Vol. 17, No. 4) the results obtained from the gravimetry by Mena and González-Moran (1977-78) are in disagreement with those of Flores et al. (1977-78). Due to this fact it was decided to analyze the magnetic information by means of Hilbert transforms to obtain the magnetic signal reduced to the pole as well as the analytic signal. Harmonic field continuation filters and correlation techniques between the magnetic anomaly reduced to the pole and the fust derivative of the gravity were applied. These procedures provide new information on the parameters of the main bodies located underneath Los Humeros Caldera. Analysis of the data supports the existence of two large shallow bodies of "deep roots": one corresponding to the internal structure of the original volcano which gave origin to Los Humeros Caldera, and the second corresponding to the small caldera known as "La Calderita" or Cerro Xalapazco, located inside Los Humeros Caldera itself. The results support the analysis given before by Mena and González-Moran (1977-78) thus eliminating the mentioned ambiguity.
