Abstract

The integration of the geological works concerning the Mexican Volcanic Belt (FVM) - the title adopted in this report for the Neo-Volcanic Belt - has been developed to analize the geological characteristics of this province and the interpretations proposed in order to provide a wider view on the geothermal aspects observed therein. The volcano-tectonic relationship since the beginning of the evolution of the FVM and the possible origin and characteristics of its basement, in the light of the subsurface information obtained through geothermal well exploration, the general geology and both surface and subsurface data, are discussed in this paper. The correlation and position of the belt with respect to the Sierra Madre Occidental are analyzed, concluding that the basement of th.e first one is different from that of the second. As a result of our studies and from the geothermal point of view the FVM province is subdivided and classified in 1 O sectors. Finally, the association of the geothermal potential with the recent volcano-tectonic activity and the shallow magmatic chambers is also described.
