The veranillo in Panama

Abstract

The rainy season in Panama is often interrumpted by dry periods lasting from a few days to several weeks. On the Atlantic side of the Isthmus dry spells are most common .in September and October, resulting in a September secondary rainfall minimum, while on the Pacific side the secondary minimum usually comes in June or July. The early-season type is associated with northerly winds, the late-season type usually with southerly winds. The two contrasting types are a result of orographic effects hut the overall dryness is due to the Isthmus being temporarily beyond the influence of large-scale convergence mechanisms.
