Abstract

This book on "Environmental Magnetism" by Roy Thompson (Edinburgh University, UK) and Frank Oldfield (Liverpool University, UK) presents in an attractive and concise way a new field of interdisciplinary studies where magnetism studies constitute the center aspect. The interdisciplinary nature of this field of study includes collaboration between paleomagnetists and geologists, geographers, ecologists, hydrologists, meteorologists, glaciologists, archaeologists, limnologists, oceanologists, chemists, physicists, etc. As the authors mention in the introduction, problems as diverse as examining the behavior of organisms to orient themselves, tracing the origin of sediments in streams, estimating particulate pollution, and studying the dynamics of the Earth's core can all be investigated in a single laboratory in one day. common and current work.
