Geofísica Internacional, co-edited by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Mexican Geophysical Union UGM opens, from this date until June 30, 2026, the present call for papers to be published in English or Spanish on Volcanism and Geothermics (manuscripts that encompass both topics in the same paper and not separately), on its various lines of research in the Special Section created for this purpose.

Summary

Volcanology, as well as geothermal energy, are relatively recent disciplines that have grown from scientific development and from the need of eco-friendly energy resources. Currently, their relationship is better understood from the perspective of high-enthalpy convective systems (>150°C) generally associated with polygenetic volcanism, as well as from moderate and low-enthalpy convective systems (50°- 150°C) generally associated with monogenetic volcanism. However, to understand the systems that contextualize a region, it is essential to involve other disciplines, such as geophysics, structural geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, among others. This multidisciplinary approach is essential due to the need to better understand volcanic processes and their geothermal utilization, which are nourished by advances in various areas of Earth and space sciences. In this context, the special section in Geofísica Internacional offers a thematic space to ongoing research results of integrated volcanolgy and geothermics, including modelling of geothermal systems in active volcanic regions. This section is aimed to increase the interest in unconventional energy sources as an alterative to fossil sources.

Who is it addressed to?

Researchers in the field of geosciences who integrate their studies in volcanology and geothermal systems from different approaches: geophysics, structural geology, petrology, hydrogeochemistry, hydrogeology, magmatism, tectonics, among other related topics.
