Abstract

A regional velocity estimation from surface wave travel times for a laterally heterogeneous structure is stabilized using as a regularizing operator the quadratic norm of the p-th derivative of the dispersion curve with respect to frequency or period. The estimation makes allowance for the null space of the stabilizing operator and uses Green's functions as inverse operators of the derivatives. The variational treatment leads to a matrix equation which has a non-trivial solution. The procedure is validated by computer experiments. Computed velocities for Pacific paths agree with the results of Leeds el al. (1974).
