Stress drops for foreshocks and aftershocks of the 1979 Petatlán, Mexico, earthquake

Resumen

Las caídas de esfuerzos de premonitores y replicas (3.5 ~ ML ~ 4.0) del temblor de Petatlán (Ms = 7.6) ocurrido en México en 1979, fueron examinadas con el propósito de obtener un mejor conocimiento de las propiedades mecánicas del material y del proceso de ruptura existente en una zona de subduccion bastante joven. Los esfuerzos fueron calculados estimándose la dimensión de la fuente a partir de la anchura del medio ciclo de la onda P y del momento sísmico obtenido a partir de una formula empírica apropiada para la región. Los resultados indican una distribución irregular de esfuerzos en toda el área de replicas y proporcionan evidencias que apoyan un modelo de dos asperidades en la fuente.
