Preliminary investigations of the extent of Río Grande rift in the northern portion of the state of Chihuahua

Abstract
Durante la última década, el rift del Río Grande ha sido reconocido como uno de los principales sistemas de rift continentales del Cenozoico. Los otros sistemas de grietas ampliamente reconocidos son la grieta de África Oriental, la fosa del Rin y el lago Baikal. Una serie de publicaciones especiales (Riecker, 1979; Baldridge et al., 1984; Keller, 1986) han llamado la atención de la comunidad científica internacional sobre el rift del Río Grande. Los primeros estudios sugirieron que esta grieta solo podría extenderse tan al sur como la región de Socorro, Nuevo México, que se encuentra a unos 300 km al norte de El Paso/Juárez. Sin embargo, estudios geológicos más recientes (Seaget y Margan, 1979) y geofísicos (Daggett et al., 1986; Sinno et al., 1986; Keller et al., 1988) documentan que la grieta se puede diferenciar de la provincia de Basin and Range. y se extiende por una distancia significativa en el Estado de Chihuahua.
