Abstract

An application to the litoral dunes using a formula developed by Ertel to compute the forward movement of the desertic transversal dunes, is presented. The effect introduced by annual variations in the direction, intensity and persistence of the winds and the influence of the water content (humidity) in the dunes sands is discussed. It is interesting to point out that the velocity of the wind that "moves" the dune is similar to the one that transforms the surface of the sea from hydrodynamically smooth to rough (about 6.5 m sec-1).
