Abstract
The International Lithosphere Program (ILP) was established in September 1980 by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) on behalf of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and the International Union of Geological Sciences (lUGS). This new international interdisciplinary research program for the decade 1980 - 1989 will focous mainly on the study ofthe nature, origin, dynamics and evolution of the lithosphere, seeking to provide an improved framework for understanding those aspects such as earth resources and hazards reduction on which human society depends for its well-being.
