Resumen

Las investigaciones, unificadas bajo la hipótesis de trabajo de la tectónica de placas, han producido una revolución en las ciencias de la tierra en las últimas décadas. Los efectos de esto han sido profundos ya que ha llevado a un reexamen de la gran cantidad de datos geológicos y geofísicos disponibles y del enfoque para obtener nueva información.
El paleomagnetismo ha jugado un papel importante en este esfuerzo. Los datos paleomagnéticos han contribuido a definir las posiciones relativas de los bloques de la corteza a lo largo del tiempo geológico y constituyeron una evidencia convincente a favor de la hipótesis de la deriva continental.
